Pharrell Williams announced new men’s creative director for Louis Vuitton

American singer and record producer Pharrell Williams is all set to take over the role of menswear creative director at Louis Vuitton. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a USA-based entertainment news outlet, the house as well as Williams’ PR rep have just confirmed news reports that he had been in talks to take the job, which was last filled by the late designer Virgil Abloh.

Williams’ first collection for Louis Vuitton will be unveiled to the public in June during Paris Men’s Fashion Week, reported the outlet. The singer has long been regarded as a red-carpet style icon, and his role as a brand ambassador with Chanel was extended in October of last year.

He has also collaborated with brands such as Moncler, Adidas for its Stan Smith line, and Louis Vuitton on two occasions (including a line of aviator sunglasses). In addition, Williams founded the streetwear brands Billionaire Boys Club and IceCream, as well as the skin-care brand Humanrace.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Louis Vuitton chairman and CEO Pietro Beccari said in a statement that he is delighted to welcome Williams “back home” after his previous collaborations with the house in 2004 and 2008. “His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter,” added Beccari.

Williams was shown covered in a blanket bearing the Louis Vuitton logo to announce his appointment. Expect the Grammy-winning rapper and producer, who has collaborated with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Justin Timberlake, to utilize his many connections in the entertainment industry to keep the house attuned and connected to pop culture. Meanwhile, Williams’ predecessor, Abloh, who died in November 2021, was the label’s first African American artistic director and led Louis Vuitton menswear for four years. Louis Vuitton picks Pharrell Williams to head menswear designs

LVMH top label Louis Vuitton said on Tuesday it has hired Pharrell Williams to head artistic direction of its menswear designs, tapping a popular figure from the music industry to fill the high-profile position left vacant since the passing of star designer Virgil Abloh over a year ago. “Louis Vuitton is delighted to welcome @Pharrell as its new Men’s Creative Director”, Louis Vuitton said in a tweet, confirming earlier reports from the Wall Street Journal and the French daily Le Figaro.

Williams’ first collection for the label will be shown in June during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris, the brand added. Williams rose to fame in the music business as a producer and singer with hits including “Happy” and “Blurred Lines.” He has won 13 Grammy awards and was a judge on the popular singing competition show “The Voice.”

“Happy,” written for the animated movie “Despicable Me 2,” earned Williams one of his two Oscar nominations. His second Academy Award nod came as a producer of best picture nominee “Hidden Figures.” Williams also has extensive experience in the fashion industry. He played a role in the rise of streetwear, co-founding the label Billionaire Boys Club with Japanese designer Nigo in 2003, and launching collaborations with Adidas as well as luxury brands Moncler and Chanel.

Last year, Williams created buzz when he turned up for Nigo’s debut fashion show in Paris for LVMH-owned label Kenzo wearing diamond-studded glasses made by Tiffany — another brand belonging to LVMH. The appointment marks the first move by Louis Vuitton’s newly appointed CEO,

Pietro Beccari .

Abloh, who passed away in November 2021, was fashion’s highest-profile Black designer and symbolized the fusion of streetwear with high-end fashion, mixing influences like graffiti art and skateboard culture into his styles. The

Pharrell Williams named as creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear | Pharrell Williams

The American musician and fashion entrepreneur Pharrell Williams has been named the creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear.

The role was previously held by Virgil Abloh who died in November 2021.

It marks only the second time a Black American designer has held a head position at the French luxury house. Abloh made history as the first when he was appointed in March 2018.

A longtime supporter, and friend of Abloh, Williams’ appointment puts an end to months of speculation about who next would take on the highly coveted role.

Emerging talent such as the Jamaican-British designers Martine Rose and Grace Wales Bonner were previously said to be under discussion, so for many insiders the announcement of Williams was somewhat unexpected.

However, his appointment is a reflection of the continued intersection of the luxury and streetwear sectors and hints at the direction LVMH wants to take the brand.

Abloh, who was hailed as a fashion maverick, was widely praised for widening Louis Vuitton’s appeal. He rebooted the idea of luxury, marrying it with the worlds of hip-hop and hype culture, and in doing so attracting a more diverse and younger consumer.

In a statement from Louis Vuitton to announce the appointment of Williams, the rapper was described as a “visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion. The way in which he breaks boundaries across the various worlds he explores aligns with Louis Vuitton’s status as a cultural maison, reinforcing its values of innovation, pioneer spirit and entrepreneurship”.

His first collection will be revealed in June 2024 during men’s fashion week in Paris.
